some words on the new tape release
12 February, 2009
seth put this up on his record label’s new site:
“I’ll keep my descriptions short and as honest as possible. I often feel songs need to be revealed– they already exist, but someone needs to show them to us as they really are and not a being with self involved nonsense caked all over it. Andrew reveals the song as it is meant: very fluid and subtle. It’s like all these invisible doors only he can see, and inside are beings that want to be revealed. He opens the door and lets us see them as they are.”

max neuhaus died yesterday. i became aware of him this past summer, when i saw and heard his exhibition and installation at the menil collection in houston, tx. his work lies just below the threshold of hearing, opening up a lot of doors as far as sound art goes. it’s really incredible stuff. i’ve been trying to hear his permanent installation in times square every time i go to new york city, but so far i’ve been unsuccessful. sound installation is something that i’ve been very interested in, but haven’t been able to do yet. what i’ve experienced and read of his work is a big influence on how i think about the whole thing. you can read a little more about it here
victory strikes again

last night, the philidor percussion group performed a piece of mine called “trio in metal.” i wrote the piece for three vibraphones, and wrote it in such a way that each performance should be completely different. like most of my acoustic music, the dynamics never really rise over a forte. i think they did a good job of it. it was the quietest piece played in the concert. you could hear the wood in the building settling. i might have a recording available soon.
i just got a package of my cassette release on cinnamon fnord/quilt records. they look really great. seth has hand screened the outside of the case, as well as the plastic cases inside. i really recommend getting it, if just for the packaging. you should be able to order one here: Cinnamon Fnord or from Seth. I’ll also have them at shows, until i don’t have any more.
this coming sunday i’ll be playing on the Jazz Incognito radio show with andrew marino. it starts at 3PM and you can stream it here. we’ll be doing something percussive and droney.
