giving thanks

i haven’t been very good at posting during this tour. it was great to be out with My Empty Phantom and Northern Valentine for so long.
Jesse and I started the tour with a show in the lobby of the university art museum here in greensboro. from there, we headed to roanoke, to play a show at the water heater with silence in central park. i think they have a surprisingly good space there. it’s a large, old storefront a little bit removed from downtown. tin ceilings and everything. i found excellent expired film at a store nearby.
from there, jesse and i made a six hour drive through the mountains to pittsburgh, pa. we met up with northern valentine, to record a radio show for University of PIttsburgh’s radio station. NV was nice enough to let me play percussion with them. i haven’t heard the recording yet, but i think that it sounded good.I got to see the Andy Warhol museum. i had no idea that man was so prolific.
the show in new jersey ended up not happening, so we got to new york a day early. i love being in that city. it feels so active constantly. i got to see moma, and the whitney museum. excellent things.we spent thanksgiving day wandering around the city, which seemed appropriate.
it’s good to be home now, though.

After these shows, performances will be a little bit more sparse. I feel like I need to take time to make my music more carefully. I expect to record much more music than I have been in the past months.
unprepared
8 November, 2008
last night was a performance of a new piece called “less delicate than the locust.” it was part of an unprepared music event we held at school. composers had 24 hours to write a piece, and performers had 24 hours to learn it. a lot of interesting music came out of it. i wrote for bassoon and bass clarinet. i think the performance turned out as well as it could have.
right now i’m working on finishing a recording that should be released within the next couple of months. it’ll be a limited-edition cassette/digital release, on cinnamon fnord recordings. seth from romance of young tigers is helping to put to cassette together. if you’ve ever seen any of his band’s handmade cd-rs, you know that it will look great.
i’m still doing work on the split with michael vallera. we met when i played in chicago last month, and he did a great set. i’m looking forward to hearing his half of the split.
at the end of the month, i’m doing a short tour with my friends northern valentine, and my empty phantom. for some of the shows, i’ll be playing percussion with northern valentine, and some i’ll be giving solo performances.
